Microsuction and Ear Irrigation

There are two main ways to remove Ear Wax

  1. Microsuction – using a small hoover to suck out your Ear Wax.
  2. Ear Irrigation – commonly known as ear syringe.

Microsuction

Microsuction is a quick and painless procedure where Impacted Ear Wax is removed from the ear canal by using gentle suction. With a machine not unsimilar to a small vaccume cleaner. This method of Ear Wax removal is very effective.

Microsuction is suitable for most patients. It is the preferred method of Ear Wax removal as per the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) as there is minimal risk of infection following the procedure.

Ear Irrigation

Ear Irrigation or commonly known as Ear Syringe is the removal of Ear Wax using pressurised water. This method can be very effective however as the ear canal is a deep dark passageway – it can sometimes become infected after Ear Irrigation if not dried adequately.

Not everyone is able to have Ear Irrigation. The pressurised water can trigger Vertigo, dizziness and sickness, and these symptoms can last for some time after the procedure.

If you have had a Perforated Tympanic Membrane (ear drum) then you will not be able to have Ear Irrigation as this can cause significant problems with your inner/middle ear.
